Among the medieval sights of Rab, its old city, surrounded by walls and churches and palaces is certainly worth mentioning. In addition to the churches and palaces, the most striking are the four Romanesque bell-towers, a quartet that creates the distinctive and well recognized skyline of the city of Rab. Rab’s Fair is the most important event that nurtures medieval cultural traditional values. In the stone streets and courtyards, and by the sea, episodes from medieval times come to life. The Rab knight’s games are a picturesque medieval event that was brought back to life in 1995. The first games date back to 1364 when they were organized in memory of the knights who defended the city. The peculiarity of the games lies in the use of ancient crossbows similar to those used by the Crossbowmen of San Marino during their games.
Music is what inspired us to spend a few hours with the mandolin players of San Vito dei Normanni in the province of Brindisi. Both the elderly and the very young fill the air with plucked notes of this now unusual instrument. Until the 1950s, the barber shops were the places where guitars, mandolins and mandolas were played. Now the Mandolin Club has revived the tradition and is “looking to the future with an ancient heart”. Young, old, professional and amateur musicians play, exchange views and grow, thus making the village even more beautiful. In the centre of the Salento Plain, San Vito dei Normanni is located 21 km from Brindisi and it has access to the sea through the seaside town of Specchiolla. The Medieval castle overlooks Piazza Leonardo Leo, around which the old town centre was developed (“li stratodde” in the local dialect).
Many great chefs, gastronomic experts and historians will agree that the modern Dalmatian cuisine has its roots in poverty. In ancient times, Dalmatian farmers only had small quantities of certain types of foods at their disposal which they had to use in a creative way in order to feed their large families. This is the story of how cuttlefish and fava beans saved the people of Kaštela from starvation. Kaštel Kambelovac is one of seven castles, located northwest of Split in the fertile coastal area that connects Trogir and Solin. It was built in 1517 by brothers Jerolim and Nikola Cambi, Split noblemen and landowners with the intent to protect themselves and the inhabitants of the village. It is unique among the castles, because it has a cylindrical shape that made it suitable for defence against the enemy.
Taking up the Renaissance passion for the garden and having a privileged access to the river, the complex commissioned by Alvise Cornaro allows nature to penetrate the urban fabric. It was designed as an “ancient theatre”, as a fixed backdrop suitable for the pungent irony of the performances of Angelo Beolco known as il Ruzante, friend and protégé of Alvise Cornaro. Just like nature and culture mix, so do Ruzante’s comedies, which mix heavy humour with the subtlety of analysis.
