4.1 Improve the quality, safety and environmental sustainability of marine and coastal transport services and nodes by promoting multimodality in the Programme area

ICARUS aimed at improving passenger intermodal transport connections and easing coast-hinterland sustainable accessibility, promoting car-independent lifestyles.
The project fought against problems generated by the massive use of private cars by introducing solutions based on innovative technologies to adapt smart mobility in a digital world. Moreover, it strived to activate a behavioral change in mobility, using the “Mobility as a Service” which is a concept representing the shift from personally owned modes of transportation towards mobility solutions that are consumed as a service.
Sustainable multimodal seamless solutions were tested through 7 pilot actions consisting in harmonisation of timetables, availability of car/bike sharing within transport nodes, innovative ICT solutions for seamless flow of information, integrated intelligent multimodal payment systems, dynamic travel planning and cross-border intermodal services.

ARAP is a Regional Agency for Production Activities, devised for the economic and industrial development of the Abruzzo region. Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Central Directorate for infrastructure and territory consists of 7 departments and is in charge of planning and financing the regional passenger public transport system (by road, rail and sea). It gained experience in activities related to topics such as international maritime passengers transport services, to sustainable mobility and intermodal transport services (bike-train, bike bus and bike-sea), financed by regional, national and EU funds.

Croatian Railways Passenger Transport is the only passenger railway operator in Croatia. E-CHAIN, ICARUS and MIMOSA, three Interreg Italy-Croatia projects highlighted their solutions, and some of its main results while sharing the pilot actions that were carried out in these years. The speakers dealt also with Covid19 and how it affected the transport sector.
ICARUS 5th webinar dealt with this new trend of Demand Responsive Transportation to meet the needs of those users that do not use the public transportation either because of the waiting hours or travel time. Mr. Joshua Biondi, Business Develoment Manager at Shotl explained how solutions such as first mile - last mile or DRT night service, DRT service outside the "peak hours" have proven to be the right mean to convince other users in using such a service and increase operator's revenues at the same time.
