SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE
4.1: Improve the quality, safety and environmental sustainability of marine and coastal transport services and nodes by promoting multimodality in the programme area
LEAD PARTNER
University of Trieste - Department of Engineering and Architecture
TARGET GROUPS
1. General public
2. Local, regional and national public authorities
3. Enterprises, transport operators including operators of multimodal logistics hubs, infrastructure providers
4. Education and training organisations
5. Universities and research institutes
METRO project aims to improve the environmental sustainability in the field of maritime transport, with a specific focus on touristic connections in the North Adriatic area. This objective will be pursued both from the technological point of view (development of hybrid solutions to be adopted in vessels used for passenger’s transportation), and from the logistic one (study on the adaptation of power supply infrastructures in small harbours, definition of new routes to be established among north Adriatic ports).
The project addresses various challenges that affect the Programme area, such as the need for more integrated, efficient and sustainable maritime connections between the eligible territories, the necessity to reduce traffic congestion caused by seasonal tourism flows, and the need to tackle the continuous lack of competitiveness of companies in shipbuilding.

VIDEO
In the METRO project the ship design process has been supported by 3D models, built for different scopes. In particular, CFD and structural analyses have been performed using specifically built models, and general ship design has been evaluated by means of virtual prototypes. The latter are 3D virtual representations of a ship model that allow to perform a set of design tasks in a variable virtual environment.
This video provides a very short presentation of the project as a whole, and briefly describes the virtual prototypes built during the project.
All the 3D models built during the project are available in the dedicated website section, together with all the deliverables.
Can the environmental sustainability of tourist maritime transport in the North Adriatic be improved?
This was the goal of METRO (Maritime Environment-friendly TRanspOrt systems), a research project funded by the European Union.
The project had a strong multidisciplinary approach, coupling the best technologies in the field of electrical shipboard power systems with a modern approach to the ship design. Moreover, the integration of the ships with the ground services was also addressed.
This video provides a very short presentation of the project as a whole, describing its aims, how it was organized, and what where the main achievements and lessons learned.
