Adswim video "SEA in ACTION!" to celebrate the world oceans day 2021

Published on 08/06/2021 (last modified 08/07/2021)

On the occasion of World Oceans Day, Cafc spa, one of the partners of the Adswim project, presents a promotional video that anticipates the short film of the reefballs placement next to the coast of Lignano Sabbiadoro in Italy.

The control and testing activities of marine waters and the coastal waters next to the depuration pipes on the Adriatic coasts and the experimentation of new technologies (disinfection systems, designed to contain the microbial load in wastewater as an alternative hypothesis to those currently in use, optimization of sensors and biosensors for the detection of pathogens) were carried out in a coordinated way on the two sides of the Adriatic Sea, involving the depuration plants of Lignano, Grado, San Giorgio, Pescara, Zara, Spalato and Ploče.

Furthermore, Cafc spa, the biggest water and wastewater management company of the Friuli Venizia Giulia Region (Italy), placed reefballs next to Lignano Sabbiadoro coast to contribute to the restoration of the area of the Northern Adriatic. Reef balls are submerged eco-compatible structures, certified to favour fish restocking and biodiversity, suitable for the protection of artificial nourishment and in the construction of barriers for protection and reconstruction of the beaches. The particular shape of the structures similar to a coral igloo, produces favourable conditions for the development of marine flora and fauna through the creation of shelters and burrows for sedentary fish species, the protection of eggs and young specimens, creating repopulation points for restoration of the sandy bottoms typical of our coast.

It is an experimentation that has represented a project within the Adswim project to be eventually re-proposed in other areas of our coast, explaine the CAFC spa engineers Michele Mion and Nicola De Bortoli and add : “Today, on the occasion of world oceans day, the first teaser video “SEA IN ACTION!”, realised by LaFILMO from Udine, that shows the reefballs placement in Lignano and that has directly involved  us in its realisation is shown on our project's website and on social media. The complete short film will be done for sempteber. Follow us!"

The company, says the President Salvatore Benigno of CAFC SPA, has actively taken part in the project by providing the expertise of company’s engineers for the various project activities and the plants in Lignano and Grado as pilot points of the experimentation. Within the project it has been possible to create an operational and management network for the improvement of water treatment and to apply innovative monitoring technologies and common management practices for the safeguarding of the ecological status of the waters of the north-east Adriatic to achieve the water quality objectives set by the EU directive of 2000.  We are now, continues President Benigno, in the final phase for the preparation of common guidelines with Croatia concerning the wastewater management to respect the sea and the environment, both important values to be protected also for the important repercussions in tourism economy of the regions of the upper Adriatic. The AdSWIM project aims to propose an innovative model of managed use of purified water with a high environmental sustainability impact, because sustainability for CAFC is a 360° value, a value that is included in the three-year 2021-2023 industrial plan of broad scope and with an European footprint.

CAFC spa manages the Integrated Water Service (aqueduct, sewerage and purification segments) of 120 Friuli Central Area municipalities with 500 Waste Water Treatment Plants. AdSWiM technicians share their knowledge in process optimization and energy saving in WWTP and utilization of even more ecological technologies for pathogens removal. Involved with public authorities they will revise law limits on nutrients form WWTP effluents, as a controlled source of nutrients for marine environment.
